State Senator John M. Sullivan (D-Rushville) was born in Macomb, Illinois on January 9, 1959. He was first elected in November 2002, and again in 2004, to represent the communities of the 47th Senate District, which encompasses a significant portion of Western Illinois. In 2007, Senator Sullivan was appointed to the leadership position of Senate Majority Caucus Whip for the 95th General Assembly.

Senator Sullivan has dedicated his efforts while a member of the Illinois Senate to focusing on the needs of the people of Western Illinois. Sullivan's legislative agenda has included the pioneering of comprehensive agricultural and Renewable Fuel programs, improving and expanding transportation options for his district through Amtrak and the I-Fly program, establishing the Western Illinois Economic Development Authority, increasing education funding, and spearheading efforts for stricter methamphetamine restrictions and penalties.

As part of his senatorial duties, Sullivan is the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture & Conservation Committee. Sullivan has been a member of this committee the past five legislative sessions and has worked diligently on behalf of the farming community. He is also the Vice Chairman of the Senate Appropriations III Committee, and is a member of the Higher Education and Transportation committees.

Senator Sullivan graduated from Hamilton High School in 1977 and from Quincy College (now Quincy University) in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. That same year, he also earned his Illinois Real Estate Salesman's License. In 1983, Senator Sullivan earned his Real Estate Broker's License. He became a partner in the successful family auction and real estate business, Sullivan Auctioneers, LLC in 1986. Prior to this he worked as a loan officer for the Production Credit Association and as the Farm Manager and Loan Officer for the Rushville State Bank.

In recognition of his work in the Illinois General Assembly, Senator Sullivan has received numerous awards from groups and organizations. Sullivan is the recipient of the 2007 "Paul Simon Legislative Award" from the Illinois Coalition for Community Service; 2007 Illinois Primary Health Care Association "Legislative Recognition Award"; 2007 Illinois Rural Health Association "Legislative Award of Appreciation"; the 2006 "Acorn Award" by the Nature Conservancy for protecting private lands; the 2004 and 2005 "Friend of Illinois Fertilizer & Chemical Association"; the 2004 and 2005 "Legislator of the Year" by the Illinois Pork Producers Association; 2003 and 2005 "Friend of Agriculture Award" from the Illinois Soybean Association; and the 2003 "Friend of Consumer Award" by the Illinois Coalition for Competitive Telecommunications.

Sen. John Sullivan is the Illinois Chairman of the Mississippi River Parkway Commission and is a member of the Woodlands Task Force.

The Senator resides just north of Rushville in Schuyler County on the family farm with his wife Joan and their four children; Matthew, Emily, Luke and Mark. Sullivan has lived in Western Illinois all of his life.

The 47th Senate District includes all or part of the following counties: Scott, Cass, Schuyler, Adams, Hancock, McDonough, Fulton, Warren, Henderson, Mason, Brown, Pike, and Mercer.
