With Republicans like this, who needs Democrats?

The sales-tax hiking mass transit funding bill that passed through the State Legislature today has finally made it's way to Gov. Blagojevich's desk. But, legislators will be heading back to work as Blagojevich has promised to change the bill to include free rides for seniors and then send the bill back down to the general assembly. Blagojevich did not, however, make any mention of writing out the sales-tax hike, indicating he's dropping his vow to veto the increase.

But what is most interesting is thin the margin of victory was in the Senate vote, namely only by a single vote - 30-25-1. While it is Metro East area State Sen. James Clayborne who is being noted as the "present" vote that Senate President Emil Jones was able to flip to a "yea", it was the votes of 4 Republican Senators that are most interesting.

State Sens. Dan Cronin (R-Lombard), Kirk Dillard (R-Westmont) and John Millner (R-Bloomingdale) all voted for the tax increase. State Sen. Dan Rutherford (R-Pontiac) was not present for the vote.

While the DuPage County GOP used to hold the reputation as Illinois' most consistently "red" county, one would imagine regular Republicans are not all too thrilled about their Senators voting to raise taxes. Sen. Cronin is the chairman of the DuPage County GOP, and Sen. Dillard is - quite ironically - the Senate Minority Whip.

You might also recall that Sen. Dillard appeared in Barack Obama's first Presidential campaign ad:

I'm no psychologist, but if a person's past actions are any kind of an indicator of what they might do in the future, the Illinois GOP might have another Paul Froehlich on their hands.
