1/28/2008Could gang-banger association break Hyman campaign?
Far be it for Illinois campaigns to have some sketchy associations.
Rod Blagojevich and
Barack Obama both have ties to indicted fundraiser Tony Rezko. During his campaign for Cook County Board President,
Todd Stroger's spokesman Sean Howard was arrested for allegedly harassing his ex-girlfriend. But, Judge Michael Hyman's liaison to the African-American community is enough to raise eyebrows, even by our pitiful Chicago/Illinois standards.
The
Chicago Sun-Times is reporting today that Judge Michael Hyman, running for reelection, paid former Gangster Disciple warlord Wallace "Gator" Bradley a total of $11,500 for "community relations". The "Gator" is a convicted burglar and armed robber and was active in the political wing of the Gangster Disciples in the 1990s. In a lesser state, a revelation of this magnitude would prompt immediate distancing by the campaign, but not in Illinois. Hyman is defending the decision to retain "Gator" Bradley as an "urban translator" - whatever that is.
Is this enough to break Judge Hyman's reelection campaign and swing the race in favor of one of his opponents? Time - and voter interest - will tell.
