How Long Should You Run An Ozone Generator?

Generally, the ozone generator should be running for at least 3 to 10 hours depending on the room size. For an entire home, at least 25-30 hours of continuous operation to kill off most pollutants. Avoid staying in the room or find a place to stay while an ozone generator is still active.

How Long Does It Take For Ozone To Dissipate?

Ozone will last between 30 minutes to 4 hours for the third oxygen atom to breaks apart and reverts back into oxygen. On a lower concentration level, it will typically take 30 minutes to 1-2 hours for ozone to breaks down into breathable oxygen. On a higher concentration level, it will take 3-4 hours for the ozone to break down into normal oxygen. To be on the safe side, wait at least 4 hours only to return back to the room after shutting off an ozone generator. Room size, temperature, dust, and contaminants will play a part in ozone dispersion in the air.

How Do You Detect An Ozone Leak?

2 common methods used to detect an ozone level in a home. First is Draeger Gas Detection Tubes (Draeger-Tubes) that detect hundreds of different gases. Residual ozone becomes sensitive to humans in the range of 0.01-0.03-ppm. Draeger tubes are glass vials filled with a chemical reagent that reacts to a family of chemicals including ozone. A calibrated 100ml sample of air is drawn through the tube using the manual internal bellows pump for sample. Second is via a portable or wall-mountable ozone detector or air quality monitor. The device built-in sensor will measure the ozone level inside a room or home. Simply leave the device in the desired location for a couple of minutes and the outcome will be displayed on the digital screen.

How to Use an Ozone Generator in The Home

Ozone is very dangerous for living organisms to breathe including humans, pets, and plants. It does play a role in killing bacteria, mold, odor and even insects crawling underneath the bed. So if you have exhausted all other types of options and have to resort to an ozone generator, please read the product instruction manual first. All ozone generators are set up differently with its unique capabilities and features. If this is your first time using an Ozonator, please go through all the safety precautions steps below.

• No living things are allowed – Never stay in the same room whenever an ozone generator is working. If you want to cover an entire house, find a place to stay while the device is running.

• Set a shutdown timer – Most Ozonator comes with a pre-set timer that you could set to power off the machine when time is up. If the particular model does not come with a timer, cover your mouth/ nose and manually turn off the device.

• Cover or remove valuable items when an ozone generator is active – Ozone atoms do not mix well with metallic things or paper. For bigger objects, try covering them with a blanket.

• Wait at least 4 hours before re-entering the room that has gone through ozonation – It will typically take 30 minutes for ozone to start settling down and become oxygen again. The longer you wait, the less likely ozone gases will still be lingering in your home.

• Do not run an ozone generator in a high humidity environment – The moisture will cause damage to the arcing inside the machine. You can however, run the machine in warm or cold temperature.

• Regular maintenance – Some ozone generator comes with a collector plate that requires cleaning every 2-6 months. If you are a heavy user, check for fine dust or oily residue on the output area as it will decrease the machine performance and durability.

How Does Ozone Work To Eliminate Contaminants?

Ozone is an unstable oxygen molecule that reacts to anything it collides with. Because of this, ozone can be very powerful in eliminating bacteria, viruses, and killing tiny insects, beg bugs, and cockroaches. Ozone will also get rid of tobacco smoke, mold, and mildew odor through oxidization. Any irritation and discomfort caused by the allergens and smoke will be alleviated. Do note that if the odor sources such as mold, mildew, and chemical substances are not removed, the odors will return eventually.

Ozone has a very short life-cycle of approximately 30 minutes. It will recombine with other gaseous elements forming an inert gas. If nothing happens, ozone will eventually break down, detach the extra oxygen atom and revert back to Oxygen (O2).
